Recording employees and visitors is processing of personal data. You need notices about video surveillance, a policy on recording and retention, and restricted access to the footage. Without them the system works but becomes a breach, which is remembered at the first dispute.

Usually 14 to 30 days, which is enough to investigate an incident. Longer requires noticeably more disk capacity. The depth is calculated from the number of cameras, the resolution and the recording mode: motion-triggered recording keeps the archive alive longer.

Motion saves several times the space but can miss slow or partial movement. A compromise is continuous recording at reduced quality plus full quality on detection. For critical zones continuous recording is better.

Yes, but the recorder must not be connected directly to the internet: such devices are hacked regularly because of default passwords. The right way is access through a secure connection with permissions separated.
