Monitoring
Availability and health of servers, network hardware, services and links.
For most tasks open source is enough. Commercial products are justified with a large estate and reporting requirements.
Availability and health of servers, network hardware, services and links.
Automatic collection of data about hardware and installed software across the network.
What is installed against what is paid for. The two usually differ in both directions.
Connecting to workstations for support, with session logging.
Centralised patching instead of walking round the machines.
Thresholds and routing configured so that notifications get read rather than ignored.
Deploying a baseline set takes one to two weeks including threshold tuning.
The size of the estate, the number of sites and what hurts right now.
Open source or commercial products depending on scale and requirements.
Installation, connecting the hosts, configuring rules and alerts.
We adjust it over the first weeks to remove false positives.
Monitoring that produces a stream of false alerts is worse than no monitoring at all. Within two weeks the administrator stops reading the notifications, and a real incident gets lost in the noise. That is why thresholds are tuned to your infrastructure rather than left at their defaults.
For a typical estate of up to a hundred devices, open source is enough: it is mature and capable. Paying makes sense for reporting convenience, vendor support and scale from several hundred hosts upwards.
A spreadsheet is out of date the day it is written. Automatic collection shows the real state: what is installed, which versions and where updates are missing. It also gives you a ready base for licence tracking.
Availability of servers and network hardware, free disk space and the state of the backups. Those four things cover most of the incidents that companies otherwise hear about from users.
Tell us about your hardware estate and what hurts right now. We will propose a set of tools, starting with the free ones.
