Choosing the approach
A terminal server, virtual desktops, or secure access to existing machines.
The approach is chosen to fit the task: terminal access is cheaper, full virtual desktops are more flexible.
A terminal server, virtual desktops, or secure access to existing machines.
The server side, sized for the number of concurrent users.
A new employee gets a ready desktop from a template in minutes rather than days.
Access over a VPN with two-factor authentication, not a port forwarded to the internet.
Restricting the clipboard, printing and drive redirection where that is justified.
Redirecting printers and scanners, in practice the most common complaint about remote work.
Deployment for a department of 20 to 30 people takes one to two weeks including testing.
How many concurrent users and which applications. The server resources follow from that.
A few people from different departments: everyone has different software and different habits.
The main build, the templates and the access policies.
Employees in groups, with instructions and support during the first days.
Printing is the main source of complaints when moving to remote desktops. A home printer does not always connect smoothly to a virtual desktop, and the employee reads that as your system not working. Print redirection deserves attention during the pilot rather than after the full rollout.
For office work and accounting systems a modest link is enough, since only the image is transmitted. Problems come from an unstable connection rather than a slow one. Video calls are better made from the device itself rather than from inside the virtual desktop.
It does not work at all, and that is a fundamental limitation of the approach. Employees who need to work offline are better served by laptops with disk encryption than by virtual desktops.
Over three years it is comparable: the server investment is higher but device and support costs are lower. The gain is usually not in money but in security and in how quickly new employees can be onboarded.
Tell us how many employees work outside the office and which applications they use. We will choose the approach and cost it.
